Welcome from our Administration!

Welcome from the President-Rector        Welcome from the Academic Dean

A Message from the President/Rector...Rev. Thomas W. Tifft

Fr.TifftFor over 150 years, Saint Mary Seminary and Graduate School of Theology has been teaching and passing on the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church to hundreds and thousands of students.  Saint Mary's has been training them as leaders in the Church and local community.

Saint Mary Seminary and Graduate School of Theology was founded by the first bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, Louis Amadeus Rappe, in 1848.  Since that time the seminary has faithfully pursued as its primary mission the education and formation of candidates for the Roman Catholic priesthood.  Moreover, for the past thirty years the seminary has placed its resources - faculty, library and facilities - at the service of the larger faith community of Northeast Ohio and developed degree programs beneficial to this wider community.  Qualified students have the opportunity to pursue graduate degrees in theology or simply to pursue non-degree course work for graduate credit or as auditors.

This website describes both the degree programs that the seminary offers as well as individual course offerings. The pictures displayed give a very small glimpse of academic and community life here at Saint Mary. The faculty and staff join me in extending to you an invitation to join us in the theological enterprise. Our sincere hope is that your participation in Saint Mary Seminary programs and courses will lead you to a greater understanding and deeper relationship with the One who is the source of all truth!

Sincerely in Christ,

Reverend Thomas W. Tifft, Ph.D.
President-Rector

A Message from the Academic Dean...Fr. Mark Latcovich

Fr. Mark LatcovichTwo days in May were exciting times for Saint Mary Seminary and Graduate School of Theology. On Thursday, May 10, 2007, Resurrection Chapel was filled with the relatives and friends of twenty-three graduates who received twenty-seven degrees, as well as faculty, trustees, and our chancellor, Bishop Richard Lennon. On Saturday, May 12, four men were ordained to the priesthood at Saint John the Evangelist Cathedral by Bishop Lennon. Each August, excitement builds as the new academic year offers new courses, new challenges and new possibilities.

Between these peak times lies the time of the hard work of a learning community, where students and professors alike enter into exploration, knowledge and skill acquisition, dialogue, questioning and learning. This is truly the valuable time that will make Graduation and Ordination 2008 events that are worth celebrating.

As you peruse our webpage, I hope that you will discover the breadth and depth of the academic programs at Saint Mary Seminary and Graduate School of theology.  This spring semester 2008 welcomes 115 students into the M.Div., M.A. and D. Min degree programs.
