On Monday, May 20th, we were honored to welcome His Excellency, the Most Reverend Thaddeus Cho, Archbishop of Daegu, Republic of Korea. Archbishop Cho traveled to Cleveland with Father H.Paul Kim to attend the Ordination ceremonies at St. John Cathedral on Saturday, May 18 at which Augustine Dongseop Lee was ordained for the Archdiocese of Daegu. Every two years, the Archdiocese sends a seminarian to study at Saint Mary Seminary. Presently there are four ordained priests from Daegu who have studied at Saint Mary Seminary and two seminarians are currently in the program. Archbishop Cho met with the Saint Mary Seminary faculty and toured the campus and presented the seminary with a statue of St. Andrew Kim, the first priest and martyr of Korea.
As special ministers of the Eucharist, instituted Acolytes may also give Holy Communion to the faithful at the liturgy and to the sick, and expose the Blessed Sacrament for adoration. Because the instituted Acolyte’s ministry places him in the service of the altar, he has a special relationship to the Eucharist, the source and summit of the Church’s life.

The eight seminarians instituted are:
Brian James DeLaat
Eric Steven Garris
Anthony Donald Gomez
Andrew John Hoover
Matthew William Jordan
James Joseph Kulway
Robert Dale McWilliams
Peter Alexander Morris

President-Rector, Father Mark Latcovich, outlines the mobile technology initiative underway at Saint Mary Seminary. The Program for Priestly Formation (5th ed.) states that “contemporary pedagogical methods that incorporate technological advances should be encouraged (#234), and the seminary has begun a concerted effort to use technology in its teaching and learning. Last semester, faculty and seminarians received iPads as part of a gift from the Bishop’s Brunch Fund to bring academic life into mobile life. We also have updated bandwidth and made the entire seminary wireless. This permits the seminarians, lay students, and permanent deacon candidates to access technology throughout the entire campus. We would like to see this initiative as our response to the late Pope John Paul II’s call for the new evangelization that requires “new ardor…new expressions…new methods” in the digital world of the 21st century. [To read Father Latcovich's entire message click here.]
